Welcome to the World of Per Becker
Per is an academic and aid worker focusing on disaster risk management and climate change adaptation for sustainable development, with emphasis on capacity development. He is now back as Associate Professor in Risk Management and Community Resilience at Lund University (Sweden), after being the Regional Disaster Risk Management Coordinator for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Dakar (Senegal).
The Academic
Per has a BSc in Fire Protection Engineering, an MSc in Development Studies, an MRes in Politics and a PhD focusing on analysing risk for sustainable development. Although his main focus has been on developing countries, he has also studied the more affluent north-western hemisphere, and has increasingly found comparison between the two contexts to be fruitful for learning. He is Associate Professor in Risk Management and Community Resilience at Lund University Centre for Risk Assessment and Management (LUCRAM), and has affiliations with University of Copenhagen (Denmark), University of the South Pacific (Fiji), and African Centre for Disaster Studies (South Africa). The Aid Worker
Per has worked in disaster risk management and capacity development since 1998, as a consultant, a Senior Fire and Rescue Officer, Teacher, Course Manager, Senior Coordinating Officer, Head of Capacity Development and Recovery Section, and Regional Disaster Risk Management Coordinator. On top of these long-term positions, Per has been deployed on short- and medium-term missions as Disaster Management Expert, Assessment Expert, Disaster Risk Reduction Expert, Livelihoods Delegate, Disaster Management Delegate, and Capacity Development Expert.
